But the most important thing she discovers is what she already knows.

When She Knows

Shannon Wynter has many things on her mind. Romance is not one of them.

Abandoned by her mother at eleven and strapped with an agoraphobic father, Shannon’s focus doesn’t travel much farther than her career as a journalist despite the sometimes maniacal efforts of her two best friends from her days at an all-girls boarding school.

But when an assignment puts her in the path of hypnotically enticing Ian Darke, not even her dedication to her career and her father can hold her steady. Pulled ever deeper into a relationship with a man she swears she doesn’t even like, Shannon uncovers Ian’s weaknesses and her father’s secrets.

But the most important thing she discovers is what she already knows.

When She Knows came out of a personal revelation about some of the relationships in my own life, and I knew it was a theme that would resonate with other young women starting their careers while balancing family and life.

What inspired this story?

This story was inspired by my unending quest to defy some of the formulas that prevail in romance novels, specifically that of the alpha male hero. I like my heroes to be full of flaws, so in this story, I gave the hero Type 1 diabetes. In addition, I always love it when people discover a strength in themselves that they didn’t know they had. I wanted the heroine in this story, Shannon Wynter, to have that kind of moment.

What is the story behind the story?

I set up the heroine in this story, Shannon, to have many issues to tackle. If life only threw one thing to us at a time, it wouldn’t be nearly as interesting. I wanted the reader to see a regular “girl” like Shannon take on those issues and learn something that she already knew. Because in the end, we are our own biggest obstacle.

Why do you write romance?

I am a huge supporter of romance for many reasons! First and foremost, for the readers: romance offers an escape from the everyday life, for the ordinary or sometimes the sadly all too real world around us. Romance gives a reader someplace to go where she can feel safe. The other reason I support romance is for the writers. Romance novels give writers an outlet to test their writing skills, dare to dream a different dream, and sometimes, live another life for a page or two.

What inspires you? What motivates you?

The people who surround me inspire me, and my two opinionated and supportive Basset hounds motivate me. Inspiration is everywhere. You just need to pay attention.

Please tell us about your other books.

When She Knows is my first dive into contemporary romance. I have spent the first part of my writing career in the world of traditional bodice rippers, that of the Regency era. My Spy Series includes five books that carries a reader through the lives of a family of spies during the Napoleonic War.

“But fraud for a defense contractor is serious. You don’t want to defend your reputation as a provider to our armed forces?”

It took him a minute to realize that clicking noise was her following him over the pavement. He spun around, his arms coming up once more to gesture his acquiescence, only she was standing too close, and instead of gesturing with authority, he ran into her, his arms striking her shoulders and knocking her against him.

He froze, feeling the length of her body collide with his, the scent of her shampoo invade his senses, her breath fall across the exposed skin above his shirt collar. He felt her hesitation, the hitch in her breath, before she shoved against him, pushing herself away.

“I’m very sorry,” he said, his hands moving uselessly in front of him as if to help her regain her balance.

She stood with her pad held against her chest like some sort of shield, and he felt his anger drain into annoyance.

“I’m sorry,” he repeated, much more carefully, “I don’t have a comment, and I need to get back to work. Please excuse me.”

He turned slowly this time, resuming his walk to the loading dock door.

“What is it that you’re using this factory for, Mr. Darke?”

He didn’t answer. No matter how much he wanted to turn around and rail about his stupid brother’s stupid decisions, he did not. He kept walking.

“Fraud, I mean, come on, that’s-”

And then he did turn.

“If you want a comment, you can call our PR department.”

“Great!” she said, and he almost smiled at her enthusiasm as she pulled up a clean page of her notebook. “What’s the phone number?”

He shook his head at her and let his feet carry him back to where she stood on the pavement, notebook poised for the phone number.

“Shannon, was it?” he said when he was close.

He had felt her breath hitch when she had bumped into him, and now he dared to step a little closer than politeness would have dictated. He saw it again, the slight hitch in her chest, and he felt a smile spread over his face. He leaned in, dropping his voice to a soft, rich level.

“Have you heard of the Internet, Shannon?”

“Yes,” she whispered softly, her eyes locked on his.

“Use it,” he said and walked away, leaving her standing in the parking lot, her pen completely still.
